10 Oct 2003, the latest release of Java version
1.4.2_02 addresses this Java bug. CodeMatrix builds 0351
and later ship with this new Java version so this KB
article no longer applies.
The CodeMatrix graphical interface program uses Java for
it's visual interface. The current release version of Java
as of the date of this article (Jan 2003) is 1.4.1.01.
This version has been found to have problems when used on
Windows XP systems with certain video drivers installed.
The effects are severe with crashes or lockups occurring
in the video device driver. We understand this problem to
be limited to the drivers for the ATI "Radeon" family of
graphics adapters. This has been confirmed by Sun
Microsystems to be a problem in the Java implementation
and is to be resolved in a forthcoming release.
Scope of the problem.
This problem affects the CodeMatrix graphical
interface only. All other modules, including the server
software, command line interface, IDE integration, Windows
explorer extensions and the active workspace manager are
unaffected.
Identifying the problem.
When installing the CodeMatrix client software with
the supplied installer a check is made, and a warning
displayed if the system has drivers likely to be affected.
You may manually check the installed video device type
by using the Windows control panel, display option and
selecting the settings tab. The installed device type(s)
are listed in the Display field.
If the computer locks up, or reboots when closing the
CodeMatrix application, it is likely that this
problem is the cause.
Resolving the problem.
The latest beta
Java runtimes resolve this problem. Installing this
module after installing the CodeMatrix client software
will resolve the problem.
In some cases an updated device driver may be available
from the manufacturer of your video hardware which might
resolve the problem.
