CodeMatrix monitors managed files on a user's computer to
ensure that the central database is kept up to date
without the need to follow manual procedures. For example
newly created files are added to source control
automatically. The mechanism CodeMatrix uses to achieve
this is called an Active Workspace. Active Workspaces work
silently in the background with no discernable impact on
system performance or function to minimize the risk of
accidental data loss.
In order to appreciate the benefits of Active Workspaces,
consider the drawbacks of systems which do not have such a
facility. Files must be added to the system manually,
failure to do so can lead to loss of files if the
workspace is discarded, believing all contained files to
be safely in source control. Changing file read only
attributes can confuse such systems and lead to changed
files being overwritten. Centralised backup of work in
progress is usually not possible, failure of a user's
computer can lead to loss of changes that have not been
checked in. Users can not see another user's work in
progress.
Other systems which do address these issues tend to be
slower in use due to the system overheads involved.
The innovative CodeMatrix Active Workspace model gives the
best of both worlds, highly dependable content management
and control with optimal performance.
